Application Development and Integration

Our Philosophy

Web sites and applications are typically a sophisticated blend of systems that require independent management as well as management across and between systems. To that end, we follow a rigorous process to build applications that "play well with others."

Fry approaches every project as an integrated services team, from start to finish. We begin with the requirements discovery process in which we work with our clients to capture and codify the business requirements. Subsequently technical definitions, design limitations, performance metrics, and the like are derived from the overarching business requirements. System design and implementation follow using iterative development and test cycles. Finally, QA efforts, performance measurement collection, application monitoring, and management 'hooks' and production release packaging complete the process.

Throughout this entire process we strive to continually focus on the ultimate goal - solutions that meet your business objectives while maximizing your IT investment.

What Do We Offer?
Within this set of services we offer numerous function point deliverables. For instance, the following are typically involved:

Functional Specification
System design and architecture that provides the physical and logical design of the business system. This information forms the basis for the implementation work along with the architectural definition of what will be required to host, maintain, and manage the site.

Human Factors Assessment
This assessment ensures that both screens and content are easy to navigate and use.

Data and Process Integration
Fry's work often integrates with third-party systems that feed Web-based solutions, including payment methods such as CyberCash or VisaNet, Taxation software such as TaxWare, and Content Syndication offerings.

Application Level Monitoring
Our monitoring services allow for routine, proactive management of the business system. We perceive application monitoring as an essential part of managing the business metrics associated with the system. For instance, monitoring of orders collected per hour is a simple, common metric that is measured. However, the metrics might be far more complicated, such as how often and expeditiously customers are able to access a CRM application for assistance.

Third-party Integration Services
We have extensive experience executing on the integration of third-party packages, whether they are CRM, ERP, or WMS implementations. We have worked with and successfully integrated numerous back-end systems, both of a proprietary and commercial nature.

Technology Assessment
Fry provides clients with an objective view of potential technology platforms and strategies. While typically part of a Consulting arrangement, technology assessment is also a core part of our technology evaluation process when defining the appropriate solution for your business needs.

Spiegel
Clients - Order Integration for Spiegel
Spiegel had long experienced issues with a customer order entry system that was not meeting their Web integration needs. While it was possible to integrate Web orders directly into Spiegel's legacy Order Entry System (OES) with no manual intervention, a significant portion of the orders were failing to do so. Integration failures resulted from a variety of issues including legacy system availability, customer's invalid data entry (incorrect promotional codes, for instance), and loss prevention procedures. These orders that experienced integration failures were then batched on the hour and sent to their call center where they were printed and manually processed after corrections were made. This manual process involved re-keying the entire order directly into OES even though corrections needed to be made to only one part of the data.

Fry initially worked with Spiegel's legacy exceptions processing procedures to understand the workflow of the call center. Then the team determined that the inefficiencies could be eliminated by re-purposing previous development efforts that used the Edify software package for legacy interaction. With this design decision, the team set about developing the Web Order Interface Device ("WOID"), a service-based solution, as a means to manage ongoing Web exceptions with the goal of reducing processing time, increasing operator efficiency, and improving customer service.

The Fry team applied both their knowledge of Spiegel's systems and their experience with improving the flow of data through complex order systems to arrive at a solution. The result was a services-based solution that leveraged existing capabilities while providing a valuable customer service, cost reduction, and time to market advantage for Spiegel.
